While Chiang Mai is cool, the hills farther north of Chiang Mai gets even cooler. Having said that, the months of March till May can get pretty hot and dry.
The month of December is a peak period in Chiang Mai. If you want to come during that time, make sure you book everything well in advance.
After February, the weather becomes hot and dry. The monsoon rain starts to appear from end May till early October. During this period, you can expect on-and-off wet weather and overcast skies. Bring along an umbrella. Beware of September, when torrential rains cause some streets in Chiang Mai to be flooded.
If there isn't rain, it is very hot in the afternoons, any time of the year. If you plan to explore the city, be sure to prepare bottled water, sun-block lotion, sun glasses and a hat. Otherwise, the blazing sun can quickly sap your energy.
